Free AML and KYC Certifications That Are Actually Accredited (Updated)
Search “free AML certification” and most of what comes back is a course with a
completion badge at the end. There is nothing wrong with that — it is a
reasonable way to learn — but a badge saying you watched something is not a
credential, and recruiters can tell the difference.
A small number of free AML and KYC certifications are
different: independently accredited, assessed with a real pass mark, and issued
with a credential ID an employer can verify. Two of them are worth your time, and
they are below.
What separates a free certificate worth holding from one that is not
| Worth holding | Not worth much |
|---|---|
| Assessed with a pass mark | Issued for completing the video |
| Accredited by an independent body | Accredited by the issuer itself, or not at all |
| Carries a credential ID and public verification page | A PDF with your name typed into it |
| Teaches something you will use on Monday | General “introduction to compliance” material |
1. FIHT — Financial Intelligence Against Human Trafficking
Issued by: AC3O, the Global Association of Certified Crypto
Compliance Officers · Cost: Free ·
Time: About an hour ·
Accreditation: ONRIGA
FIHT covers how financial systems are used to move the proceeds of human
trafficking, and how compliance teams detect it: trafficking typologies, the
transaction patterns and account behaviours that flag it, and the role of virtual
assets and blockchain analytics in tracing illicit flows.
It is self-paced, runs to a 20-question assessment, and issues a certificate
instantly on passing. It is among the most-enrolled free certifications with
working KYC and AML professionals, and the reason is straightforward — the red
flags it teaches are the kind you can apply to a live alert queue rather than
recite in an exam.
Worth it if: you work in transaction monitoring, onboarding,
or financial crime and want something concrete on your CV in an afternoon.
2. AGZIT-TF — Counter-Terrorist Financing
Issued by: AGZIT ·
Cost: Free ·
Assessment: 30 questions, 30 minutes, 70% to pass ·
Accreditation: ONRIGA, Gold tier
Passing awards the AGZIT Certified Counter-Terrorist Financing
Analyst (AGZIT-TF), issued with a verifiable credential ID. The course
and the certificate both cost nothing — there is no paid upgrade at the end, and
the credential is valid for two years and renews at no cost.
Where FIHT is an hour of awareness, the CTF programme goes deeper. It covers
terrorist financing methods, sanctions designation logic, freezing obligations,
and the detection indicators that sit behind screening decisions — the same
ground a KYC or AML analyst covers every time a name hits a sanctions or PEP
list and has to be resolved rather than waved through.
That makes it unusually practical for a free programme. Sanctions and PEP
escalation is where a lot of analysts are weakest, and it is a question that
comes up in interview.
Worth it if: you handle screening alerts, or want to be able
to talk about sanctions escalation with more than surface knowledge.
Where free certifications stop helping
Both of the above are genuinely worth holding. Neither will get you hired on
its own, and it would be dishonest to suggest otherwise.
A free certification demonstrates interest, initiative, and a specific piece
of knowledge. What it does not demonstrate is that you can carry a caseload,
make defensible decisions under time pressure, or write a file that survives
review. That is what a role-aligned paid certification is for, and it is why
recruiters treat the two differently.
The sequence that works:
- Take a free accredited certification. FIHT in an hour; the
CTF programme if you want depth. Both are verifiable, so both are real
evidence. - Work out which track you are on. Onboarding and due
diligence is KYC. Monitoring, investigations and reporting is AML. - Certify for that track. Our guides to
globally recognized KYC
certifications and
globally recognized AML
certifications set out which credential fits which role. - Stop there. One role-aligned certification plus a free
accredited one reads as focus. Ten completion certificates read as
indecision.
Frequently asked questions
Are free AML and KYC certifications recognised by employers?
Accredited ones with a verifiable credential ID carry real, if limited,
weight — they show initiative and specific knowledge. Unaccredited completion
certificates carry very little. The distinction matters more than the price.
Can I get a KYC job with only free certifications?
It is possible at entry level, particularly alongside relevant operations or
banking experience, but it is the harder route. Most employers hiring KYC
analysts want a credential built around the KYC lifecycle and assessed
properly.
How long do these take?
FIHT is about an hour including the assessment. The CTF programme is longer —
five modules rather than an awareness module — and ends in a 30-question
assessment in 30 minutes at a 70 percent pass mark, drawn from a larger bank,
with two attempts.
Do free certificates expire?
Terms vary by issuer. Check the credential page before you rely on it in an
application.
What should I put on my CV?
The full certification name, the issuing body, the accreditation, and the
credential ID. “Financial Intelligence Against Human Trafficking (FIHT), AC3O,
ONRIGA-accredited — Credential ID XXXXX” tells a recruiter everything. “Completed
free AML course” tells them nothing.
